Favorite Resources: Summer Olympics 2012

Favorite Resource This Week

Welcome to "Favorite Resource This Week", a weekly link-up hosted here on our blog. All of us have so many wonderful resources that we come across and use every week, and it's great to link up and share our favorites! **Resources of any type are fair game...books, videos/DVDs, websites, favorite television programs, computer games, field trip ideas, ideas for using old materials in a different way...anything that has worked well for your family.** Feel free to use a post you've already written that's applicable and link it up! If you don't have a post, it's fine to just leave a comment...and remember to check back and see what others are sharing!

I post "Favorite Resources" on Fridays, but the link-up remains open through the following Thursday, so you can link any time. You can link your post below. Please include our blog button (HTML code is on our sidebar), or a text link back here, in your post. Thanks so much for linking up and sharing...I am looking forward to reading everyone's posts!!

With the 2012 Summer Olympics coming up in just under a month, our family has decided to create a notebook to collect information about the Summer Olympics. I thought I'd share the resources that we've found helpful with this  :)

Homeschool Share has several printable units that I downloaded: General Olympic Printables, Summer Olympic Printables, and an England Country Study Lapbook (we intend to do a bit of learning about England/London as well, since the Olympics are taking place there).  Now, we have no intention of using all of the printable pages...I picked and chose the pages I could see us using, and I printed them out. We're going to use a few of the lapbook components by gluing them onto cardstock, hole punching the pages, and then putting them in our notebook. The girls are pretty excited about the project, and even David is on board and involved.

We've been learning some neat facts, especially about the Olympic torch and the flame. A few sites that have helped with this are the official London 2012 Olympics site, an article in The Guardian that has a downloadable Olympic torch route, and an article from the CBBC Newsround about how the Olympic flame stays alight.

Since we plan to keep track of the medals that the U.S. wins, this very comprehensive Olympic Medal Tracker from education.com, which my super-duper friend and co-worker Karen shared with me, will be just perfect!

I did borrow several books from our library system, but I've barely had a chance to look at them. I'm certain that if you search your library catalog, you can find some good selections, though.

Lastly, our latest Kids Discover magazine arrived yesterday, and the theme is Ancient Greece...and includes information about the ancient Olympic Games...great timing  :)

  1. I hope we get Discover Kids today....that is perfect! Sadly, I have not done any teaching around the Olympics. We are still focused on finishing up our core subjects that we let go during DI season. I hope I can squeeze some in before the games start. I will check out these resources.

    1. I was very selective about what I actually printed out from the Homeschool Share resources. My girls would never have wanted to fill in all of the pages. I like the flexibility of being able to mix and match to make it work for us!
